The University of Australia's new residential building has a '5-star' green rating 

A new 250-unit tertiary student residence designed by Allen Jack+Cottier for St Catherine's College in Perth, Western Australia, is set to proceed following development application approval this week. St Catherine's College is an independent College that provides accommodation for students attending The University of Western Australia (UWA).

Allen Jack+Cottier Principal Michael Heenan said: "Beautifully designed, well executed, affordable student community living is an increasingly important drawcard for tertiary institutions, both here and internationally, in the competitive education market. Over the past 5 years we have designed accommodation for more than 3000 student beds in Australia and also in Asia, with more in the pipeline ... these projects draw on AJ+C's specialist experience designing a huge range of multi-residential projects over the years, for a new and discerning audience."

Allen Jack+Cottier's design for St Catherine's College both respects and responds to its surroundings, which includes UWA's famous Hackett Hall. The development incorporates a range of sustainable innovations, and has been designed to a National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) ‘5-star' green rating.

The project is expected to start construction in April 2012 for completion in November 2013. The new St Catherine's development will benefit the College and surrounding areas in a number of ways. There will be improved safety and amenity in the area through considered design and master planning, and the concentration of residential and associated facilities on the site. An increased patronage of local shops and community services and faculties will boost economic vibrancy of the area.

The improved utilisation of walking and cycling to and from the University, College and nearby retail facilities will reduce the demand for on-street parking. The high quality architecture and urban design will encourage design excellence and the sympathetic blending of development architecture with the surrounding local character and streetscape.
