The new Katitjin Centre provides a benchmark for sustainable education design
The Katitjin Centre design concept was developed around ideas and principles about spatial and operational clarity, human comfort, visual transparency, integrity of materials and sustainability.
Designed as a flexible and engaging training centre for the Australian Institute of Management (AIM), the building provides a healthy indoor environment with abundant natural daylight, good air quality, excellent acoustic performance and strong visual connections to the outdoors. It provides a quality benchmark for sustainable education design and, through the use of electronic display boards, promotes environmentally sustainable design awareness to a wider audience.
Full height glazing creates a delightful indoor environment well connected with its landscape surrounds, including an expansive indigenous bushland outlook to the south. The expansive quality of the landscape views, particularly from the upper floors, is a surprising and refreshing relief and counterpoint to the day-long sessions which make up the bulk of the management training operations of the Centre.
A covered walkway provides a cross-campus pedestrian axis and a generous terrace to the east affords views to Perth's city centre skyline. Internally, a central spine fosters interaction and exchange amongst building users. Large sliding doors and operable walls provide flexibility and connectivity within the building and provide links to terrace areas on two levels.
The close collaboration between the consultant team and the client resulted in an outstanding ESD outcome, a spatially generous and operationally supportive training environment, and seamlessly integrated services and structural innovations including the dramatic reinforced fibreglass verandah canopy.
The Katitjin Centre has been awarded Green Building Council of Australia's highest accolade, a 6 Star Green Star (v1 Education) Design Certification, and has recently been submitted for 6 Star Green Star As-Built certification. The building reflects AIM's ambition to provide a high quality training facility that substantiates its environmental credentials and commitment to all-round excellence.
