BKK Architects achieve their goals through zones of exploration
BKK Architects was founded in 2000 by Tim Black, Julian Kosloff and Simon Knott. The studio is involved in a range of architecturally related pursuits that all stem from an idea of Expanded Practice. This is a model of practice that is formed around a notion that good design is best achieved by the use of many different, but closely aligned, modes of agency. This testing of concepts is processed through many contested zones of exploration:
Design Research and New Technologies - The firm is actively involved with a number of universities in areas of design research and exploring new areas for building design and production.
Sustainability through Better Living Environments and Resilient Communities - BKK aspires to provide the scaffold for the development of shared experiences and meanings in society. They therefore consider place-making an essential component to their practice. By providing improved living conditions and more resilient communities they can provide more sustainable futures.
Scale and Typological Flexibility - No project too large, no project too small......they can affect all areas of their society by appreciating that design can play a role at some level. To that end, BKK have completed projects ranging from small shelters and toilet blocks, to houses, apartment towers, multi-function community buildings as well as re-configuring our cities. Every project influences the others.
Contextual responsiveness - whether it is the expansiveness of the Australian landscape or the grittiness of an inner city block, all their projects respond to these in a considered manner that aims to stimulate new understandings and occupations of space.
Media and Event Production - BKK's directors have initiated many events, exhibitions and media programmes that aim to provide a different perspective to their practice as well as stimulate discussion, ideas and provocations. They also aim to provide a sophisticated public discussion that broadens the general public's understanding of architecture and the fields in which they operate. These include an architectural radio show for the past 8 years, TV shows on Architecture, writing, lectures and exhibitions.
BKK Architects has won numerous awards for their projects and their work has been widely published both locally and internationally.
