Working in Barcelona with digital manufacturing processes, self-sufficient energy and distributed intelligence
Enric Ruiz-Geli and his interdisciplinary architectural team Cloud 9 in Barcelona work at the interface between architecture and art, digital processes and technological material development. The architects’ multifaceted projects include stage sets and buildings, installations and industrial products, and are realized together with various collaborative partners.
Cloud 9 is committed to the use of new technological developments and the performative character of architecture, which creates intelligent structures in emulation of nature. He is Co-Chairman of the 3rd Industrial Revolution Architects Roundtable committee with Jeremy Rifkin, 2007, and his works belongs to the collections of MoMa (New York), FRAC Centre Collection (Orleans) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
Some of the most relevant completed works of cloud 9 are: Plaza del Milenio, Valladolid (2011); Media-ICT building in 22@ district, Barcelona (2010); SED Pavillion, Zaragoza (2008); Evru Cave, Barcelona (2008); VillaBio, Figueres (2006); Morphorest, Forum de las culturas de Barcelona (2004). About the on-going projects; there are elBulli foundation in Girona; the Arbre Empathique in Brest; the Forest Hotel, Barcelona; the New Headquarters of the OECS, St. Lucia, Eastern Caribbean; Villa Nurbs House, Empuriabrava and the NY Aquaruim.
The concepts involved in Cloud 9 projects are: digital manufacturing processes, ubiquitous technology, cloud computing, off grid, self-sufficient energy and distributed intelligence. The firm are very aware that buildings represent 35-40% of the climate change problem. Architects are the main cause of climate change, so they need to make construction the solution to the problem.
In consequence Cloud 9 have developed and patented several R+D+I prototypes such as The Artificial Leaf (Hotel forest, 2005); the Bird Tree, Zoo Marine, Barcelona, (2002); Villa Nurbs’ ceramic skin and Corian skin, (Empuriabrava, 2000-10); and in the Media-ITC there is the Nitrogen cloud and the Arduino diaphragm membrane (2006-10). The Media-ICT has been awarded recently with the WAF Award, for the World’s Best Building of the Year, 2011; it was also Special mention at FAD Awards, 2011; Investigation Prize at XI Spanish Biennal of Architecture and Urbanism, 2011; or Steel Design Awards ECCS, European Convention For Constructional Steelwork, 2009, among others.
