In a Victorian first, this facility is housed within Victoria's first specialist sports school.
The first of its kind in Victoria, this purpose built facility is housed within Victoria’s first specialist sports school, Maribyrnong Sports Academy. The brief was to create an iconic development that would reposition the school for a future of sporting and academic excellence. The architects' vision was to develop a building that would achieve this to ensure an environment where students could realise their sporting dreams and complement them with academic results.
The design reflects a form of spatial precognition, echoing moments that an elite sports star will experience. The underbelly of a stadium, entering an arena, the running track; all are experiences that will form the psyche of every sports star. All are part of the experiences of this engaging new building.
The sampling of built forms was achievable through the use of a structural steel system, allowing for the replication and combination of these spatial experiences. The truss within the main sports hall is expressed as both horizontal structure and stepped columns. Conceived as two foreshortened grandstands, we sought to celebrate the structure which innovates beyond the current two court sports halls that define most schools.
Internally the structural steel system is expressed, exposed and painted throughout the building. The facility enhances the education process for the students of Maribyrnong Sports Academy by enabling student athletes to balance academic and sporting goals in an athlete friendly setting. The design promotes pathways into the sporting profession, with students able to monitor their own development while advancing their academic careers.
