Award Entry

Scott Kyson introduces a collection of his residential projects

Since establishing his practice in 2004 at the age of 24; Kyson's work on bespoke private houses has received great acclaim, having received CIAT's Alan King Award in 2007, 2008 and 2010, winner of the 2008 Hackney Design Award and runner-up for both Grand Designs 'New Build Home of the Year 2008' and WAN 2010 House of the Year Award.

The work submitted within this entry briefly introduces two completed and two current projects:

Cadogan Corner occupies the plots of three former terraced houses destroyed during WWII. The form, scale and articulation of the facade follow the rhythm of the Victorian Terraces, whilst the colour, texture and detail define the houses from its archetypal counterpart.

The black palette enables the expression of architectural components through the materials natural texture. Predominantly clad in Douglas Fir strips that have been mechanically wire brushed and vacuum stained, a greater depth to the timber's natural grain has been achieved.(Complete 2010)

Lau Sun House is overlooked on almost all four boundaries. The design was influenced by some of Japan's inner city traditional Ryokan's, whereby external views are contained within the site's architecture. At a glance the house doesn't resemble a seventeenth century Japanese guest house but the palette of dark wood, white render and clean lines, offset by the rich leaves of bamboos and maples, contained within a serene stone walled enclosure are where the similarities start to unfold. (Complete 2007)

Butler's Lake House is an 11,000sq ft family house situated on an exclusive Florida Lake front. The accommodation spreads laterally across the site between stone clad planes stone that provide both shading and elevated terraces. Transcending towards the lake a series of terraces of stone, timber and grass follow the architectural language of the house, leading to the boat dock.(Current Project)

Sunken House Hampstead takes its form from a stone clad excavation, a volume that is split with a glazed two storey insertion creating a series of courtyards of varying hierarchy.(Current Project)
