Pupils and the local community can enjoy the fantastic music school in Sherborne
Sherborne is an independent boys’ boarding school in Dorset founded in 1550. It has a long and successful history of music and alumni achievements to match. The brief was to inspire the next generation of Sherborne musicians and provide the facilities to encourage practice and performance amongst pupils. There is a direct benefit to the local community in terms of access to concerts attendance and use of rehearsal space.
The building was conceived as 2 pavilions set in a landscaped garden that offer opportunities to take music playing outdoors. The design, massing, scale and materials aim to complement and enhance the Conservation area setting. The building is divided into 2 parts - for group activities, teaching and performance and the small scale private study practice spaces. There is an internal street which unites these.
Excellent daylight and views into and out of the building - have been guiding principles of the design - while ensuring that appropriate acoustic and environmental targets are achieved. By doing this it invites non-musician students and Sherborne neighbours to participate in the vibrant musical life of the School
