iredale pedersen hook architects design new residential, office & retail building near Perth's Burswood Casino
On the edge of the Burswood Casino site, iredale pedersen hook architects explored the potential for a mixed-use building to achieve a new standard of economical sustainable design with natural light and ventilation to all spaces and panoramic views of the Perth city skyline. Combining these issues resulted in a plastic, fluid form and a new marker for the city edge that engages in an optimistic manner with the ground anticipating an improved future urban quality.
The design is articulated into a number of pieces that each serves a particular function. The engagement with the street is addressed by flexible two storey, 2-bed townhouses or office / retail. These spaces also address the entrance podium that may contain a small shop / café, additional offices and communal facilities such as gymnasium and pool areas, communal vegetable garden and bicycle storage racks. This entrance podium will be heavily planted with native landscaping creating a garden setting for the co-existence of the various uses.
The tower is a simple extruded form with the 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments extending to a height as required to suit the developers brief. Communal gardens shall be incorporated on to the top of the stepped form. Each of the apartment types is clearly identified by the balcony privacy and sunshade devices with contrasting materials and colours. These materials include corten steel for the single bedroom apartments (steel is the backbone of the West Australian economy), gold anodised aluminium for the 2 bedroom apartments (gold representing wealth and prosperity) and oxidising copper for the 3 bedroom apartments (copper representing culture and permanence).
A similar material sensibility is developed internally with a sequence of corruptions creating unique and individual experiences. The architects believe this project offers the opportunity to establish an environmental sustainable design bench-mark for high density residential living in Perth.
