36BTrd was a 3-storey residential renovation project with aims to serve as a model for the sustainable landed house typology in a tropical climate. Applying the principles of passive design, the building planning and fenestration is conceptualised to encourage natural and cross ventilation while the providence for daylight is uniformly distributed throughout the elongated terrace.
To fully harness the airflow, internal walls are predominantly full height sliding panels while carefully taking into consideration water penetration issues during monsoon seasons. A central stairwell having enhanced stack effect that of a traditional air-well due to the heated photovoltaic skylight roof, further creates more draft within the house.
Designed with an emphasis for a greener lifestyle, innovative active solutions such as the Hybrid DC air-conditioning system have allocated photovoltaic panels suitably sized to generate energy efficient air conditioning. Solar thermal collectors were also used as part of the energy efficient system to power the DC water heater. Replacing the need for conventional roofing system, Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) panels clad the entire roof which encompassed the ceiling composite design that integrates ventilation slots, water, thermal and noise insulation. Solar powered external landscape lightings and energy efficient LEDs were installed to provide artificial illuminations when required. A solar charging unit integrated with external metering compartment has been fitted for recharging the occupants electric bicycles.
Within the constraint of small outdoor areas, trees and vertical climbers were planted at strategic location to assist in shading of the building envelop. In addition, a vertical green wall situates at the back boundary wall facing the patio. The increase in the amount of greenery to the residence provided a lower ambient temperature for indoor comfort and delight. To reduce potable water requirements, the roof has been designed to naturally channel rainwater to planter areas for irrigation.
The interiors were furnished with recycled timbers for floorings, table and vanity tops. Recycled concrete aggregates have been used extensively to ensure environmental protection and good indoor air quality. Awarded the highest Green Mark rating in all aspects of resource efficiency, this would not be possible without the owners' passion in green living.
