HKS unveils design for expansion at King Fahad Medical City in Saudi Arabia

HKS, Inc. recently unveiled its design for a major 1.6 million sq ft campus expansion project for King Fahad Medical City, one of Saudi Arabia’s largest and most advanced medical complexes in Riyadh. The expansion transforms the 1,395-bed medical campus into a regional destination for diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation healthcare services with the addition of a 473,000 sq ft, 231-bed, state-of-the-art cancer and proton beam therapy centre; a 368,000 sq ft, 316-bed neuroscience institute; a 120,000 sq ft, 48-bed cardiovascular centre; a 243,400 sq ft, six-storey laboratory and office building; and a 60,000 sq ft central energy plant.

Responsible for architecture, planning, programming and interior design services for the major campus expansion, the team worked collaboratively with the leadership at King Fahad Medical City to translate the hospital’s project vision and specific goals into a unique design solution: promoting world-class care while blending the latest medical technological advancements with operational best practices, in an environment that enhances healing and patient-centred care. The architecture is inspired by abstractions of the familiar, connecting the centres of excellence in a unified expression.

The gentle undulations of the façade evoke the image of fingers of sand and water mixing. Inspired by date palm leaves as viewed from above, the pattern in the gateway screen and atrium roof membrane provides comforting shade and diffused dappling of light. The sculptural forms of Proton Center translate the pattern into a powerful and meaningful landmark, as the palm leaf pattern becomes a symbol of hope and healing in the campus transformation. The interiors feature expansive spaces animated with filtered light, regional botanicals and contemplative water features.

The refreshing retreat inside counterbalances the harsh climate and urban activity outside, while resonating with layers of human connection, familiarity, privacy, dignity, nature and poetics of place revealed through layers of discovery at each encounter inside. The project, slated to open in November 2013, is envisioned to be a landmark gateway for King Fahad Medical City, exuding a welcoming serenity that draws inspiration from cultural and regional influences.
