Minister confirms that hospital numbers will multiply in Saudi Arabia over next two years

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, Health Minister for Saudi Arabia, has announced that 33 new hospitals will be completed in the Kingdom over the next two years. Local information source Arab News quoted the Minister as saying: “At present the Health Ministry is implementing 195 projects such as health towers, specialised hospitals and health centres.”

The news comes as the Minister and his team were applauded by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abudullah for their diligent efforts to ensure that this year’s Haj was free of contagious diseases. 24 hospitals and 141 health centres were prepared to welcome the 3 million pilgrims that attended the Haj in 2011 with around 5,000 beds available to attend to those in direst need. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were also given vaccinations to ensure that the mass gathering was free from contagious diseases.

In a continuation of this successful event, Dr. Al Rabeeah has revealed ongoing plans for a number of advanced intensive care units across the Kingdom to the cost of SR500 million. Five 500-bed hospitals are in the works for East Riyadh, North Jeddah, Makkah, Baljurashi, and Tabuk while South Riyadh, Jazan, Hafr Al-Baten, and Abha are to receive smaller 200-300 bed facilities. The Minister has confirmed that ‘the new hospitals are constructed conforming to American code and specific safety standards’.
