Foster + Partners to design Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences in Jerusalem

Foster and Partners has been selected to design the new Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The global design studio will work in collaboration with two local practices: Baer, Shifman-Nathan Architects as Executive Architects and Zadok Sherman who will design the onsite laboratories.

Speaking to local news site the Jerusalem Post, Hebrew University Vice President and Director-General Billy Shapira explained: “This project will be an important contribution to the Hebrew University and the city of Jerusalem because the building will become a magnet not only for the scientific community but also the general public, who will see an architectural masterpiece that displays the innovation and progress that characterise the university.”

The 10,500 sq m facility will be Foster + Partners’ first construction project in Israel and is thought to be formed of two elliptical curved structures centred on a social courtyard space. The firm will no doubt draw on its vast experience in sustainable design, merging innovative technological features with gestures to the traditional Jerusalem architecture already onsite.
