14km metro line contract handed to global infrastructure specialists

RMJM has been awarded the contract to design one of three new metro lines in Hyderabad, India. The new line, that RMJM will design, will consist of 13 elevated stations and two interchange stations over a 14km route and is due for completion in 2015.

The Mass Rapid Transit System will be an above-ground viaduct structure connecting the city and will cover the three main arterial routes in the State capital.

Built and operated by Larsen & Toubro, it is the biggest PPP (Public Private Partnership) metro sector contract in the world. It will involve the construction of 71.16 km of elevated metro rail in three corridors and 63 eco-friendly stations, which will include retail and commercial space.

Based out of their Singapore Studio, the RMJM contract also includes the design of two interchange stations, which will be between 4,000 and 5,000 sq m in size and inspired by Islamic design. One of these stations will connect the metro line to the 74-platform Mahatma Gandi Bus Station.

The Hyderabad Metro project, which will be integrated with the existing suburban railway network and bus stops, will feature automatic trains and will use the latest metro cars, signaling and communication systems.

Charlie Barguirdjian, RMJM Design Director said: “RMJM has a fantastic reputation for delivering transport infrastructure across the globe. This award highlights our extensive knowledge and expertise in designing world-class metro systems in challenging geographical environments. The line will be sympathetic to the historical districts that it will pass through and the new system will help to dramatically reduce the journey time around the city.”
