Shanghai studio of global firm to complete two large-scale schemes in Suzhou

BDP has secured two new projects, each following a competitive design process, in the ancient city of Suzhou which lies to the west of Shanghai. Suzhou is one of the country’s top destinations, famous for its classical gardens and its temples. As one of China’s famous water towns, it is known as the Venice of the East.

Suzhou Dushu Lake Masterplan
The Suzhou Dushu Lake Masterplan is a mixed use high density retail and residential development together with high rise office and ground level commercial uses. Located on a gateway site it aims to strengthen transport links and access and provide an identity for an emerging residential district. The development includes 3,000 residential units, 135,000 sq m of office development, two 220 room luxury hotels, along with multi level shopping and leisure centre including basement car parking on a 22 ha site. At the heart of the scheme is an ecological park that connects to the waterfront and is part of an interweaving of landscape, water and infrastructure

Suzhou Yinshan Lake Sports Centre
This project is located within a sport themed park and will be a landmark leisure facility on an exceptional site overlooking lake Yinshan. The 4,600 sq m leisure complex is based around an indoor sports hall on a site that has already been extensively landscaped. A key driver of the design is to maximise the outlook from the building, and for the views of the lake to be fully exploited and enjoyed.

The projects were secured via the practice’s rapidly growing Shanghai studio, and will be delivered by BDP’s team in China in conjunction with the practice’s network of UK and global studios.

Shanghai Studio head Steve Gillham said: “BDP has a long history and excellent reputation within all the sectors that China is looking to develop; and projects like Liverpool One demonstrate how we can deliver large scale schemes sensitively and seamlessly. This is crucial in cities like Suzhou where a balance between respecting and preserving ancient assets, and the creation of new urban realm, needs to be carefully maintained.”
