VONSUNG takes third place in competition to change the face of Pushkinsky Cinema 

Named after the Russian author Alexander Pushkin, the Pushkinsky Cinema in Moscow has become renowned in Russia and beyond as a hub of filmatic expression and the home of the Moscow International Film Festival. Recently, science-based products and services company DuPont, the Union of Architects in Russia, YEM, RIBA and Architizer ran an international competition inviting architects to re-envision the exterior of the Pushkinsky Cinema with the contest ‘Changing the Face – Moscow 2011’.

The third prize and €3,000 was awarded to VONSUNG, who incorporated DuPont™ SentryGlas® into their Pushkinsky Jewel concept. Using the visual image of the Cinema volume as a glass jewel ‘floating’ on a series of pillars, VONSUNG suggested opening the space outside the complex by removing the existing glass panel entrance to unveil the building to passers-by.

A key concept of the design is to create a Walk-around Gallery on the building’s first floor, wrapping the 24m-high volume in DuPont™ SentryGlas® to establish a visual connection between the architecture and Pushkin Square. The presented design suggests lighting this balcony naturally to further the relationship between inside and outside space.

Additional uses of this material and reasons for its choice are explained by VONSUNG: “DuPont™ SentryGlas® structural interlayer’s are chosen, among others, due to its protection against wind, weather and impact protection. By utilising coated low-E glass, we increase the building overall energy efficiency – it can assist in engineering more effective thermal insulation and controlling the transmittance of V radiation. DuPont™ SentryGlas®, offering long-term durability even when edges are exposed to weather and less susceptible to moisture intrusion, and remaining free from clouding even after years of service, makes our specification choice ideal.”

The competition was won by Colombian architect Juan Andres Diaz Parra for his ‘Frozen in Time’ concept, with Adrian Reinboth, Jenny Grossmann and Franziska Böttcher’s ‘Moving Light Palace’ taking second place. 1002 architects entered the competition from 62 countries.
