Recognition for RTKL at 2011 ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards
Continuing the global architecture and planning firm’s winning streak, RTKL received honours for three retail projects at the 2011 ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards last week. RTKL-designed and masterplanned Metropolis in Moscow received a commendation in the Best New Development category, and Sofia Shopping Mall in Bulgaria was named a finalist, benefitting from RTKL’s concept design. Belgium’s Médiacité, a project on which RTKL provided early masterplanning work, took the top prize for large refurbishment or expansion.
The awards came just days after the Global Retail & Leisure International Awards dinner, where RTKL was named Designer of the Year and the company’s major retail development in Kuwait, 360 MALL, was selected as International Shopping Centre of the Year. RTKL was also named International Practice of the Year by the Architects’ Journal AJ100 in May.
Receiving a commendation for Best New Development, Metropolis is a 320,000 sq m mixed-use development in downtown Moscow linked to the city’s public transit system. It features 258 shops over three floors and the largest food court in Russia. Finalist Sofia Shopping Mall in Bulgaria, a 66,700 sq m, six-level shopping centre, was designed by local architect Ilian Iliev of Planning Ltd. using RTKL’s concept design. The mall is strategically positioned in the burgeoning eastern section of the city and offers an unparalleled merchandising mix that includes the first Carrefour hypermarket in the city.
In addition to the ICSC’s prestigious award, Médiacité also won acclaim at the Global RLI Awards as Shopping Centre Renovation of the Year. RTKL’s early masterplanning work provided the platform for Ron Arad’s architectural design on the project, a once out-dated 160,000 sq m facility that is now a revived regional retail destination that promotes the city’s urban renewal goals.
