Nightingale Associates upgrades historic mental health hospital on Dorset coastline

Plans to extend St Ann’s Hospital in Dorset have been approved by the Borough of Poole Council. The £35m project for the Dorset HealthCare University NHS Trust involves the refurbishment of a 1980s block and two new buildings designed by Nightingale Associates. The first phase at St Ann’s Hospital will go on site in autumn 2011 and is expected to be completed by summer 2013, with subsequent phases to follow.

Set on a cliff-top overlooking Flaghead Chine beach, the new scheme will share the site of a Grade II* listed building. The 4.2 hectare site boasts attractive grounds and is a secluded and therapeutic backdrop for patients with mental illness.

The first building to be built will be an extension to an existing 1980s building. It will provide a new acute assessment unit, male treatment ward and will be accessed through a three-tiered shared canopy entrance. The 1980s building will be refurbished to provide single en-suite bedrooms. The second new building will have 32 single bedrooms and support facilities for low secure patients.

All proposed works have been designed to protect the heritage of the area whilst providing 21st Century mental health facilities. The predominant construction materials will be textured stone cladding and high-quality brick, which complements the 1900s brickwork and gives a timeless quality to the hospital.

A key element of the overall scheme is the masterplan, which has been developed by Nightingale and Terence O’Rourke Ltd. The central open space will be reconfigured to reflect the 1900s plan, complementing the original historic vision. M&E services will be provided by Hoare Lea Engineers and Hyder Consulting are the appointed structural and civil engineers.

The development will implement sustainable and BREEAM standards. The three-tiered entrance features large expanses of glazing to maximise daylight and the surrounding views. To avoid overheating, sun screens, blinds, brise soleil and natural ventilation will be used. The project will be delivered by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), who has previously collaborated with Nightingale on a number of projects including the first ‘Barn’ operating theatre in the UK at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool.

Project Architect, Graham MacDougall said: “Considerable time and effort was invested by the client and design team for the pre-consultation planning meetings as our design required a sensitive intervention between the old and the new. By using timeless architectural language and materials we believe as a team we have created an exemplary scheme that will benefit all building users.”
