Just what the world needs, more destinations for the rich and famous.

High-end buyers given the chance to make their mark on island in West Indian Ocean

Vamizi Island is a new masterplanning project by COA, Bluegreen Planning + Design, and developers Cabo Delgado Investments Limited, offering top-end residential villas in one of the world’s most secluded paradisiacal locations. Sited on the northern tip of Mozambique’s picturesque coastline, Vamizi Island is part of the Quirimbas archipelago where a local population of 1,200 people share the largely untouched natural habitat with 132 species of birds, 400 species of fish, green and hawksbill turtles, dolphins, corals, and other biologically diverse and endangered species.

Construction of luxury destination The Vamizi Island Lodge is now complete, and focus has turned to the production of individual villas for the high end market. Two pavilion-style villas have already been completed however potential investors will be encouraged to select a site of their choice and work with the designers to establish a bespoke design that is personal to them. Each plot includes between 2 and 13 acres of space with 105-250m of private beachfront.

Although there is the potential for buyers to make their own mark on their property, COA has established a framework of four differing villas influenced by local traditions and natural inspirations. Ian Gray, owner of COA and lead architect on the project explains: “After considerable time spent over numerous site visits, we gathered an intimate understanding of the unique island of Vamizi and the specific site features, which helped us create the Vamizi Style: a cohesive blend of African vernacular, rustic barefoot island, Arabic Swahili, East African safari, colonial and contemporary styles. Our designs reflect each of these influences.”

Working from the mantra of Vamizi Island, Touch the earth lightly, follow the sun and listen to the wind, COA’s guidelines for the villa constructions suggest the following: a Traditional villa with 45 degree pitched roofs; a Dhow Sail villa, inspired by the shape of the sail boats seen around the archipelago; a Canopy villa, a more creative approach with lattice type screens; and a Ocean Wave villa, with wavelike roof forms. Each property will also feature a lookout tower – a direct reference to the Portuguese lighthouse legacy of the island.
