Ballymore submits planning application for Terry Farrell & Partners Embassy Gardens masterplan at Nine Elms

Ballymore Group have submitted a planning application for Terry Farrell & Partners Masterplan for Embassy Gardens - the area of land around the new US Embassy in Nine Elms, London. The Hybrid application covers the outline for the entire 15acre masterplan, as well as detailed design for phase one of the development which has been carried out by a host of big-name architectural practices led by Farrells.

Sir Terry said today: “This whole stretch from Tower Bridge to Battersea Power Station presents an incredible opportunity to restore this area, which was once a part of central London. Industrialisation led to it becoming a hole in the city’s fabric and this is about joining it up and planning for liveability with a vibrant mix of uses and high quality public realm.”

Embassy Gardens will deliver up to 2,000 new homes and the potential for over 500,000 sq ft of office and flexible workspace. New leisure facilities, including a new Heath and Well Being Centre, a 100 bed hotel, 130,000 sq ft of retail, bar and restaurant space, a new grocery store and other varied uses will support the new community, as well as the 1,800 people working in and visiting the new Embassy every day.

Embassy Gardens occupies a key site within the 195 hectare Vauxhall, Nine Elms, Battersea (VNEB) Opportunity Area and will regenerate 15 acres of riverside ‘backlands’ currently occupied by light industry and warehousing, creating a new Central London neighbourhood just 10 minutes walk from Westminster.

The site is currently disconnected from its surrounding neighbourhoods by the busy Nine Elms Lane and a Railway Viaduct. Farrells’ first move was to step beyond the boundaries of the Masterplan area to address this isolation.

The Embassy Gardens masterplan is to be delivered in two phases. For phase one, which was submitted in detail, Farrells led the collaboration of a team of architectural practices that included Fielden Clegg Bradley, AHMM and FLACQ.

Working with landscape architects Camlins, Farrells have designed a public realm that combines a variety of public spaces together with a series of private courtyard amenity spaces. The masterplan aims to create a new district that reflects the liveability of London and completes the final piece of Southbank Jigsaw.
