Coworth Park Estate, Ascot is revedeveloped as a luxurious holiday destination
The brief, from the client Dorchester Collection, was to re-develop and restore the magnificent Coworth Park estate to create the finest country house hotel and spa in the UK, with a design and décor that recognised Coworth Park's origins yet avoided the predictable country house clichés.
This involved the conversion of the hotel's main Mansion House into a 30-room hotel with a fine-dining restaurant, bar and versatile events facilities; the conversion of the existing stables and cottages into 40 additional rooms and suites; the conversion of the barn into the hotel's more relaxed dining restaurant; building a new eco-luxury spa; extensive landscaping and restoration of the grounds and the addition of a new, sustainable Energy Centre.
Essentially the buildings have been restored to their original external form and adapted to suit a modern, sustainable development. Wherever possible traditional or recycled materials have been used, and research undertaken to ensure the original aesthetics are retained.
The highest quality materials have been used throughout. Externally, traditional materials have been used wherever possible, including lime render, lead slates and reclaimed bricks. Internally hardwood and carpeted floors are set against painted walls and ceilings with moulded plaster profiles. Fabric walling and mirrored panels feature in the Entrance Hall and the function areas, whilst bathrooms boast marble floors and walls, and also feature copper baths. Bedrooms are furnished with luxurious fabrics and bespoke furniture.
The entire estate comprises over 240 acres of picturesque Berkshire parkland. As part of the restoration works, the historical landscape has been restored and enhanced to provide a suitable setting.
High-performance glazing with narrow Krypton-filled cavities and spectrally selective coatings allow the sash windows to retain their traditional appearance whilst minimising heat loss and unwanted solar gain.
Coworth Park is one of the UK's most environmentally-friendly hotels, using renewable and low energy technologies. The hotel aims to reduce total carbon dioxide emissions by at least 50% thanks to radically different approaches to heating, cooling and lighting. Key features include: solar controlled glazing, carbon neutral fuel supply in the form of willow and an Energy Centre including a bio-mass heating plant and ground source heat cooling. All rain and surface water is recycled by draining into the lake to then be used as irrigation for the hotel's own polo fields and its willow plantation.
