HBO+EMTB completes vivid sustainable housing redevelopment in Sydney
This new residential project in Sydney’s inner west, has set a new standard for public housing developments in Australia. It demonstrates that highly sustainable public housing outcomes are both realistic and achievable in terms of function, project demographics and housing affordability.
Designed for Housing NSW by HBO+EMTB, the Lilyfield Housing Redevelopment is the first social housing project in Australia to be awarded a 5 Star Green Star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Multi-Unit Residential Pilot tool.
The project comprises 24 one-bedroom units, 58 two-bedroom units, and 6 three-bedroom units, increasing the capacity of the existing housing by more than double.
The project features passive solar design attributes, with all units having north or east facing living areas and natural cross ventilation. Solar design features include photovoltaic cells for solar hot water and the on-site production of electricity. The latest technology in gas boosted solar hot water systems is also incorporated into the north facing roof forms over the access stair wells.
The development does not feature traditional basement car parking as there is not only plenty of street parking available, but it is also well serviced by public transport.
Space allocated for a community garden and an informal play area will be developed once residents have moved in. This will be wheelchair accessible and allow tenants to grow their own vegetables.
