Coastal leisure centre in Gruissan takes inspiration from undulating waves
French design practice CHABANNE & Partners architects has completed a highly sustainable leisure complex on the dunes of the French Mediterranean coast. Composed for the City of Gruissan, the new Espace Balnéoludique offers three key areas of leisure activity to the local community and visiting tourists. These comprise the following:
Education/sport - a 250 sq m covered swimming-pool and a 20 sq m paddling pool suitable for school lessons, training sportsmen and women, and families
Leisure - an area designed for summer visitors. The complex offers exterior 'fun' features including fountains, pools and a big waterslide built on a dune
Wellness - with an independent 620 sq m area, unique in the region, the wellness centre aims to to answer the needs and desires of adults. Far from the noise of traditional swimming pools, it offers a calm atmosphere made for quiet relaxation
The discrete architecture melting into the dunes is formed into natural undulations, ends in a glazed volume at the south and southeast faces to capture views of the scenic surroundings for visitors and to allow maximum natural light into the building.
