Gateway Center at Westchester Community College receives LEED Gold Certification
Opened in September 2010, the Susan T. Rodriguez and Ennead Architects designed Gateway Center at Westchester Community College, New York has recently received LEED Gold Certification. Designed to enhance the college experience for many recent immigrants seeking to improve the quality of the lives and those of their families, the Gateway Center creates a strengthened campus identity and a new threshold to the College.
With a strong concentration on ecology and sustainability, the Gateway Center has just been granted LEED Gold Certification. Much attention has been paid to the building’s overall siting and massing strategies, and the integration of energy efficient systems and materials. Susan T. Rodriguez states: “We sought to create a building that serves to strengthen the meaning of the word Gateway for those who might already know its definition and forever define it for those who are learning it for the first time in English…As a physical embodiment of ‘something that serves as an entrance or a means of access’.”
