Office AT designs showcase building for Bangkok University
Bangkok University Admission and Information Center is a mixed-use building. It includes various programs to support many activities on Bangkok university campus, but there are three main programs of this building. The first is the admission and information centre which serves as an information / admissions area, also functioning as the 'living room' of the university. The second program, the student lounge area, is a place for student activities such as study and research groups, relaxing etc., while the third is an 80-seat restaurant for public and student training.
The site is in front of the main campus of Bangkok University. The admission and information centre program is on the second floor, clearly visible from the main street. The main exterior stair is at the front of the building and is linked directly from the public plaza for easy access. Also, to support various users from different directions, the building is provided with an interior stair with skylight through the aluminum fin and a ramp on the back to support disabled access and connect the building with the landscape and buildings nearby. A black granite reflecting pool is placed in front of the building to make users feel comfortable and relaxed when they use the building.
On the second floor an area of the student lounge is pushed out to become an approach of the restaurant entrance on the first floor, making the student area close to the reflecting pool. The cantilever box at student lounge is covered with a double-layer skin. The inner layer is transparent glass. The outer skin is a perforated aluminum panel which continues from the interior space to cover the cantilever box. The effect of this double-layer skin is opacity at day time, which provides privacy for the student lounge and transparency at night time, which provides security for students.
