1 Mont’ Kiara mall in Kuala Lumpur prepares for impending opening
SPARCH’s first major completed project in Malaysia is readying itself for an upcoming grand opening, with 40,000 sq m of retail space spread over five levels. The international firm were commissioned to design the roof and interior for the 1 Mont' Kiara mall, incorporating ‘sophisticated design concepts and innovative technologies to create a unique and exciting retail destination’.
A geometric matrix spans the roof of the mall; a triangulated transparent canopy constructed using ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) to allow vast amounts of natural light to illuminate the retail space below. Not only does this build a relationship between interior and exterior spaces, but the stream of natural sunlight decreases the need for electrically generated light, hence lowering the mall’s carbon footprint.
The choice of ETFE also enables the venue to adapt its surroundings using a range of vibrant colours. The lightweight pillow roof reacts to lighting and projection, transforming the colour of the ceiling to cater for any events, activities and performances in the atrium beneath. An immense, abstract hibiscus flower – the national flower of Malaysia – has been seamlessly introduced in a tiling pattern on the atrium floor, furthering the wide palette of finishes, textures and colours incorporated into this major build.
Stephen Pimbley, SPARCH’s principal and 1 Mont’ Kiara’s design director explains: “We have envisioned a modern yet cutting-edge design for the 1 Mont’ Kiara mall that provides a perfect balance between functionality and adherence to environmental conservation. The replete natural light offered through the use of the ETFE-clad canopy gives the shopper a feeling of traipsing around under an ‘open-air’ shopping mall. We are confident that the 1 Mont’ Kiara retail mall will be well-received by locals and tourists alike.”
1 Mont’ Kiara is part of an extensive mixed-use project spread over 3.4 acres of freehold land. The project is comprised of a 20 storey office tower, a 34 storey block of designer officer suites, luxury serviced apartments and the 1 Mont’ Kiara retail facility.
