Cannon Design's new spa resort in British Columbia

Specialising in whole-body wellness, Sparkling Hill Resort and Wellness Hotel is an exceptional European-inspired resort located on a 188-acre mountaintop site overlooking Okanagan Lake in Vernon, BC (approximately 4-1/2 hours northeast of Vancouver) - a region recognised for its majestic mountains, refreshing waters, lush vineyards, world-class golf and skiing. Its panoramic views of the mountains and the lake are breathtaking and are accessible from all the interior spaces, including the astonishing four-story window wall in the lobby.

The design of this 240,000 sq ft wellness resort is inspired by the elements. Chiseled from granite bedrock, the architecture has a fluid style that respects and infuses the natural landscape. Guest rooms challenge conventional expectations, with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing panoramic mountaintop views and unique bathing fixtures that extend the spa experience.

Swarovski crystals and lighting systems are integrated into the hotel's fixtures, finishes, lighting, and overall architecture, giving the resort its literal 'sparkle.' A focal point of the resort is the entrance lobby, a three-story glass atrium that sparkles like a crystal. The complexity of replicating the multifaceted twinkle of crystal, in a span of over 18 meters on a mountaintop, posed significant design challenges. An innovative design was created incorporating the use of tension cables and point-supported glass hardware to sustain over 90 uniquely shaped pieces of glass, angled at different directions in the 3D space.

Efficient water and energy use and sustainable construction, indoor environment, and materials criteria were fundamental goals; the hotel sits on a geo-exchange field projected to provide approximately 110% of required heating and cooling energy. Sparkling Hill Resort will offer.

The crown jewel of this stunning 152-room, full-service hotel is the 20,000 sq ft wellness spa, laid out as an internal 'street' lined with treatment areas along its east side. Reception spaces reflect the sensory qualities of the treatments occurring within, with sub-corridors stretching deeper into the building toward individual treatment chambers and cubicles and providing glimpses to the natural landscape at their ends. In some rooms, crystalline windows fill 'fractures' in the dense outer wall, bathing interiors with natural light; other chambers are tightly controlled environments evoking sensations of being deep in the native rock of the mountain. Sparkling Hill Resort will offer more than 100 treatments in 48 treatment rooms. The resort will also offer the very first cold sauna in North America with temperatures of minus 100 degrees Celsius.
