Ove Arup & Partners design ambitious new development for Madrid
La Ciudad del Conocimiento (CdC), is an ambitious project promoted by Asociación Madrid Network, belonging to IMADE (Madrid Development Institute) to create a unique space, catalysing a change of economic model into knowledge based model, where R&D plays a key role.
Madrid is considered one of the 10 most competitive regions in the world with a higher concentration of researchers. CdC sets a new model of a compact mid-size city in the north area of Madrid and will aim to accommodate the majority of the 25% human capital from the Madrid region.
This ambitious project includes the establishment of more than 1,500 companies involved in the sector of R&D, providing over 30,000 qualified jobs.
The program also develops a range of complementary uses which aim to promote a mix of uses in the city as well as, diversity and creativity. This is reflected in the creation of friendly spaces for scientific / technological implementations; business centres; service areas; residential and leisure areas which form a functional whole, harmonising the various uses while remaining respectful to the environment.
CdC promotes the integration and settlement of the creative sector through the provision and management of affordable accommodation for businesses staff and the generation of quality of life, providing the best connectivity with intermediate cities’ competitiveness.
Compared to a conventional operation, business attraction and business creation are encouraged through an attractive and diverse offer.
The city will promote innovation by becoming a test field for new technologies in the following areas: integration of the CdC in the territory and infrastructure in a highly ecological environment; environment as an ecological buffer regenerating degraded areas and integrating the existing water courses into the urban design itself; urban design that is mixed, diverse, compact and flexible; and a strategy for mobility developing a public transportation system that serves more than 140,000 inhabitants, based on an intelligent bus system and a tramway model on tires, reducing impact and costs.
The design makes use of 100% renewable energy, from solar and biomass cogeneration, reducing consumption through the introduction of a SmartGrid and uses 50% less water than a conventional development and recycles 100% of their municipal waste. The project will have the most advanced infrastructure management systems in the city.
