New health centre in North Wales houses multiple practices under one roof

A new healthcare centre in Connah’s Quay, North Wales offering a range of medical, social and community care services under one roof is now open. The Connah’s Quay Health Centre, designed by Holder Mathias Architects and built by Allenbuild, houses three established GP practices in the town, who have relocated to the new facility, and also replaces the existing NHS clinic. As part of the scheme, new council offices and a pharmacy have also opened in a building adjacent to the centre.

Holder Mathias was commissioned by Haven Health Properties to evolve a concept for the development of a world class Primary Care Resource Centre in Connah’s Quay, one of the first of its kind in Wales. The centre, commissioned by the Flintshire Local Health Board, offers a range of primary healthcare services, including GP surgeries, midwifery, diabetes, sexual health, podiatry, dietetics, nursing, speech therapy, phlebotomy (blood sampling) and a pharmacy.

The 3,700 sq ft building will provide bigger premises for each of the three surgeries relocating, including additional consulting and treatment rooms to allow services to be expanded, as well as providing modern facilities such as improved IT and communication systems, new furniture and an onsite café for patients and visitors. Although the three surgeries will still operate as separate practices, each with their own dedicated areas within the building, it is hoped the centre will lead to stronger joint working and bring primary and community care together, with facilities for staff training intended for use by a number of local GP practices, as well as partners in health and social care.

Project leader for Holder Mathias, Emma Jackson, explains: “The facility is designed to provide a landmark community healthcare building that will bring all primary care needs under one roof. Our designs had to respond to a complex site that took into account the integration of many different users and sectors, as well as providing a more structured link to the High Street. There were also other factors we needed to consider, such as the confidentially issues associated with clinical spaces, while still maintaining a comfortable environment.”
