Dublin Airport's Terminal 2 on target for completion this November 

Being built for Dublin Airport Authority by Arup as prime consultant and design engineers, Mace as construction manager and with Pascall+Watson as architect, the new €395m second terminal (T2) at Dublin Airport will be capable of handling 15m passengers per year, long and short-haul. The 75,000 sq m terminal, through a simple and elegant architectural solution, overcomes site constraints and maximises natural light to create a bright airy space for passengers, which is intended to calm and relax.

The curved geometry of the building envelope was technically demanding and owing to the precision required and the fact that works have taken place while the airport is in operation, much of the steel was prefabricated off-site with a ‘just-in-time’ strategy used for delivery. The structure, recently given a Structural Steel Design Award, utilised 12,000 tonnes of structural steel and 55,000 sq ft of structural metal decking, stair cores and staircases.

The building envelope has been designed to last and achieve high levels of thermal and acoustic performance. It includes a Kalzip substructure with Alucobond rain-screen panels, forming a seamless outer skin. Brise soleil solar shading on glazed façades and roof lights minimise heat gains and the thermal envelope exceeds current building regulations requirements, reducing the energy required to heat or cool the building.

A new departures building, Pier E will be constructed perpendicular to the new terminal, providing boarding gates and parking for up to 19 aircraft. The overall T2 project also includes an improved internal campus roads network at Dublin Airport, a major utilities upgrade, a new multi-storey car park and the provision of sites for a future ground transportation centre and a planned metro station.
