A sustainable, recreational and multi-disciplinary sporting venue
The project brief called for the development of a stadium that is 'iconic', as a beacon to the city of Durban. A key driver for the development to ensure that the project is sustainable. The concepts of Iconic, Symbolic and Multifunctional are important precepts to achieving sustainability.
The stadium’s arch is a defining silhouette, a familiar marker against the landscape. From within, the arch forks to create a view of Durban, a window onto the city, symbolically looking back at where the city has come from on the one side, and the future on the other side.
An iconic building imbues meaning, familiar associations and symbolic representations, together with rooting itself culturally, aesthetically and through meaning into its environment. Moses Mabhida Stadium has not only achieved this realisation, but has also become a beacon for the city of Durban.
At a precinct urban design level, a range of activities are catered for. This includes sport and recreation related as well as other activities that contribute to a vibrant public realm. Defined by retail edges, restaurants, containing busks of trees ensures the development of a dynamic and active space throughout the year.
By placing it on the podium, the stadium is given greater stature. The client wanted the stadium to rise up from the environment, creating an experience as visitors lead up to the entrance of the stadium.
The bowl-like shape of the stadium allows for all the spectators to be able to see the action and feel that they are a part of the whole event. Normal stadiums tend to be more rectangular in shape. The client wanted all people from different walks of life to become unified, to become one form within this dome-like structure.
The design is a ‘world first’ in the design of roof arch foundations, which involve diaphragm walling to bedrock, massive cappings and springer plinths. In addition, the stadium also achieved a ‘South African first’ for pre-cast design and installation in stadiums and also achieved the specified strict requirements for concrete quality, durability and aesthetics.
