New 'shop front' for Hertford Regional College's Broxbourne and Ware campuses

Work has been completed on two new buildings on Hertford Regional College’s Broxbourne and Ware campuses, designed by architecture firm Bond Bryan. The £41m projects provide a new ‘shop front’ to the college to encourage access by the local community. Spanning an area of 4,500 sq m in Ware, 9,100 sq m of new build and 2,500 sq m of refurbished space in Broxbourne, it is hoped that these developments will change the face of vocational learning in Broxbourne and East Herts.

Hertford Regional College is currently the principal provider of post-16 and adult education in the local area and the new facilities are set to provide new resources and opportunities for young people and adults looking to expand on their existing qualifications. The new building on the Broxbourne campus features a training restaurant open to the public; kitchens and a bakery; an 18 seat mock air cabin with security check in desk; dance and music facilities; sound recording and TV Studios; a 140 seat performance theatre and major learning resource centre alongside classrooms and IT suites.

The new Ware campus development includes a learning resource centre, restaurant, internet café, hair and beauty salons, IT suites and a specialist centre for Business and Computing. The hair and beauty salons provide an open showcase for students, facing directly onto the main road where there is a separate entrance for clients. The development also creates a landscaped courtyard between the new building and the College’s Grade II listed Amwell house.

Bruce Raw, Associate Director at Bond Bryan, said: “Because the nature and function of the college changed in recent years a number of the existing buildings were no longer fully fit for purpose. The new buildings on both campuses provide a wide range of high quality learning environments alongside retained structures. The buildings create new possibilities in teaching and learning, blurring the definition between social and learning activity.”

GVA Grimley acted as project managers on this project and Morgan Ashurst was the main contractor.
