New women's hospital by dwp takes inspiration from Zen to aid patient comfort
Design Worldwide Partnership (dwp) has been instrumental in the Architecture and Interior renovation of the Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand since 2004. dwp undertook its most recent commission for the full renovation and upgrade of the hospital in the
interior and FF&E design of the Women’s Centre.
The brief was to create a fresh and contemporary identity for the centre, while complimenting other and ongoing refurbishment works in the hospital campus by dwp. The functional and spatial requirements of the brief meant the layout needed to be very efficient but also be generous and practical in providing user comfort to the patients, visitors and the staff.
The interior scheme drew from an underlying 'zen' warm contemporary Asian theme, linking the space through the visual language of other areas, while introducing a new and rich colour palette, soft materials and intimate screened seating areas to create a unique identity. To maximise comfort and efficiency of the layout, lounge-style seating areas are were located
adjacent to the examination rooms. This allowed the design to stage the waiting sequence and improve traffic flows, and which are linked by streamlined and cross-over circulation spaces.
Furthermore, dwp's design responds to the client's service orientated approach to address the specific needs of individual patients and visitors. In addition to making the waiting lounge and examination rooms experience as comfortable as possible, care and attention to addressing the staff's very detailed needs, including integrating existing solutions was a primary concern. For example, spacing specialised exam rooms and equipments at intervals within the space, rather than grouped, customised document storage units to suit file management, and highly efficient detailed room layouts enabling a greater number of smaller examination rooms. As a designer dwp is convinced that this attention to detail is essential to assisting the client in enhancing their best practice approach, and in achieving the most efficient, fluid, and reliable service to patients
The Women’s Centre has opened to the public since March 2010 and has since been positively welcomed and successfully adopted by both the staff and its visitors.
