Luxury diamond-shaped boutique hotel confirmed for London EC1
Soneva Properties have had planning permission confirmed for a luxury 247-room boutique hotel in London EC1. The angular, diamond shaped structure has been designed by architecture firm Squire and Partners and is set to be located opposite Moorfields Eye Hospital on City Road. With its shimmering, striking exterior, the design for the new hotel was inspired by the opposing optical hospital, with its iridescent outer shell reflecting the idea of the optical and the visual.
In the formation of this design, Squire and Partners also took inspiration from the 1980’s artworks of Bridget Riley, using a triple glazed skin and differing levels of transparency, opacity and solidity in an effort to convey diagonal slopes breaking across an underlying vertical structure. The project also includes elements of light manipulation, both internally and externally, to aid aesthetic appeal and assist solar performance in an effort to enhance sustainable development. Inconsistent facade openings are scattered across the exterior of the hotel, becoming larger towards the apex to exploit the panoramic views and symbolise the increased social use of these floors.
The interior space has been designed to meet multiple commercial needs, with a mix of business facilities, hotel rooms, public bars, restaurants and offices throughout the building. An effective exterior is planned for the ground and lower ground floors, where the outer shell of the structure ‘lifts’ at a diagonal angle to reveal the hotel lobby, public bar and restaurant.
