Zaha Hadid museum gets underway in Michigan

Zaha Hadid joined Michigan State University officials and dignitaries today to break ground on the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in East Lansing, Michigan. Construction on the new museum is expected to be complete in 2012.

Billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad is an alumnus of MSU and donated $28 million, with $21 million toward the construction of this museum and $7 million for acquisitions, operations and endowment

Hadid’s design for the three-level, 46,000–square-foot building features steel and concrete with a pleated stainless steel and glass exterior. The museum will be adjoined by an outdoor sculpture garden as an extension of the east entrance courtyard and by a large plaza at the west entrance.

“Our design for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum captures the imagination, presenting endless possibilities for exhibitions in state-of-the-art galleries and continuing Michigan State University’s reputation for excellence and innovation,” said Hadid, a Pritzker Prize-winning architect from London.

Once completed, the museum will have more than 70 percent gallery space and room to display large artworks. The primary focus of the museum will be contemporary art.

The university has raised nearly $33 million in private funds for the museum, which is expected to cost between $40 million and $45 million.

Hadid was selected as the winner of an international competition for the Broad Art Museum in January 2008.
