Outpatient surgery and lab building expand Wilmer Eye Institute

The Wilmer Eye Institute is a world renowned department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System with distinguished research, clinical and residency programs in ophthalmology. Ayers Saint Gross has designed a new 202,000 gross sq ft building, with five floors of state-of-the art laboratories to support Wilmer’s ophthalmologic research programs and a 30,000 gross sq ft outpatient surgery center with seven operating rooms.

A five-storey atrium was designed to encourage interaction between researchers, provide a large gathering area for lectures and events, and bring natural light into the building. Bridges across the atrium connect the building.

Translucent glass walls allow the natural light to permeate into the public and private spaces, as well as providing a visual connection to the atrium, laboratories and offices. Interactive spaces located within and near the atrium, including conference rooms, stairs and casual seating areas were designed to further enhance a sense of community among Wilmer researchers.

Recently, it was announced that Wilmer will partner with the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on research, education and patient care. The two internationally renowned institutions will collaborate in an effort to cure blinding illnesses, while training the next generation of leaders in ophthalmology. Ayers Saint Gross is the Design Architect in association with Wilmot/Sanz on the Wilmer Eye Institute project.
