Celebrating design, innovation and sustainability in the architectural industry
The WAN Product Awards was established in conjunction with Arup to identify and celebrate innovative building products from around the world and raise their awareness in the global architectural community.
The inaugural judging session saw an impressive line-up of jurors matching the wide array of innovative products sourced from around the world. The jury panel comprised: Matt Cooper – Arup (Chartered Manager), Steve Moschini – Stanhope plc (Director of property development), Jason Flanagan – Hamiltons (Director), Tim Pettigrew – Swanke Hayden (Architect - Materials & Innovation), Nigel Fraser – BAA (Product & Technical Strategy Manager), Michael Hammond – Editor in Chief at WAN.
The 32 products assessed were wide ranging from metal grills through lighting and software to bomb proof walls and glazing. Facades, lighting and eco products produced the biggest clusters of entries. Some of the entries had an immediate effect with two of the judges stating their intention to consider the products for their own projects. (more next week)
The Dyson Air Blade was heralded as an exemplar of innovation and was cited as a role model for the awards. It narrowly missed the shortlist of six as the judges gave preference to newer products, receiving instead a “Highly Commended” badge. The other Highly Commended product was the Milgard Smart Touch lock. The innovative easy action window lock addresses the growing requirement to adapt building design to meet the requirements of an aging population.
Further details and judges comments will be included in next week’s News Review.
