Perkins+Will ensure Signature Place is as appealing at pedestrian level as it is to the skyline
This mixed-use project consists of residential units, office space and retail and occupies a full city block in the downtown area of St. Petersburg, Florida. The project is an urban infill which not only adds to the skyline, but also activates its street edges.
The massing elements of the project vary in height and relate to the variety of scales of the downtown, which is a mix of high- and low-rises. A four- and six-story base defines the street edge on all four sides. This base contains ground floor shops, cafes, outdoor public spaces and studio housing units which mask the parking podium in the centre. The upper floors of the base are a mix of offices and residential units. Carved out areas, such as a pocket park with a water feature along the southern site edge and a garden buffer at the main residential entry, add urban gathering spaces to the city.
On top of the base is a landscaped private amenity park for residents which also enriches the view over the parking deck below for the surrounding buildings. A triangular-shaped tower emerges from the base and provides waterside views to all residential units, as well as a changing skyline profile as you move around the city. The unique typical floor plan shape provides distinctly different units, while also enlivening the exterior expression of the building. Balconies along the undulating southern façade help protect the floor-to-ceiling glass skin from the strong sun, while the northern façade is glazed flush to the perimeter, thus providing abundant natural light into the units and generous views out to the Bay.
