GS&P completes Nissan's U.S. headquarters
Nissan relocated their North American corporate facility from California to Tennessee in an effort to create further synergies with existing manufacturing, financing and engineering operations throughout the Americas. Nissan’s management desired an efficient, flexible facility with the goal of creating a work space that would put the employee first and establish a unified sense of corporate culture and values. The result is a 460,000 sq ft facility on a 50-acre campus that supports the culture and mission of Nissan with a balance of function and performance through design.
In addition to office space to support up to 1,500 employees, the 10-storey structure houses cafeteria and dining facilities, meeting, conferencing and training facilities, as well as a large product training and marketing analysis space. A 1,100-space parking structure preserves existing green space and also houses a fitness centre for employees and families.
Transparency, connectivity and collaboration are key components of the Nissan corporate culture. This emphasis inspired the idea of a community as a metaphor for development. 'Town Centers' are connected to the floors above and below by a series of two-storey atriums and communicating stairs to encourage a sense of community and transparency. These hubs of activity generate numerous chance encounters among employees resulting in opportunities to exchange ideas quickly and efficiently outside the context of formal meetings.
The building's exterior reflects the brand culture by using sweeping forms and creative concepts which mimic the carmaker's focus on creating dynamic, smart, reliable and sustainable solutions. The desire to offer employees panoramic views of the surrounding hills is balanced by the introduction of six-foot-deep sunshades designed to maximise daylight harvesting, reduce the need for artificial lighting and minimise the impact of solar heat gain and glare.
The facility was completed and celebrated its grand opening in July 2008.
