Zwarts & Jansma's designs for environmentally friendly golf resort

The Indoor Golf Arena is a business model and an architectural project in one for one of the fastest growing sports: golf. With available golf facilities not likely to meet demand and golf developing as an element of a total lifestyle experience, the planned Indoor Golf Arena, the world's largest and most diverse Indoor Golf Centre, offers a unique golfing experience.

Indoor Golf Arena's facilities will amongst others include 14,000 sq. m training facilities on synthetic grass, 20 state-of-the-art golf simulators and a rooftop driving range with 34 bays. These centres can be placed worldwide – talks are being held with two municipalities in the Netherlands and with investors in among others the United Arab Emirates and Russia.

The target public is varied; the business public finds comprehensive business facilities, lounge area and an excellent restaurant, where working, networking and relaxing can be combined. The broad public will enjoy wellness and golf fitness facilities as well as a mega-size golf equipment shop. The shape of the building anticipates all demands; a generous and open space to play golf and a hotel tower that can also be used as a conference centre. Up to 250,000 visitors per year can use the facility.

Opening a golf course in hot or dry climates poses major problems for the local water balance. A golf course situated for example in southern Europe (Mallorca) uses the same amount of water as 8000 residents. The Indoor Golf Arena (IGA) bypasses this problem in a very elegant way. Because it is an indoor facility, synthetic grass and golf simulators are used. The water consumption is lowered drastically.

The cooling techniques depend on the fact that cold air sinks. A ventilation installation can, based on recirculation, create a ‘blanket’ of cold air in the lower regions of the hall, thus only where people remain. This newly developed technique keeps installation and energy costs at a reasonable level. Generating solar energy and using other techniques saves additional energy and keeps the building CO2 neutral.

IGA is one possible solution to advance tourism and create attractive sports and entertainment facilities without wasting water and energy.
