Woodhead captures the ‘essence’ of Singapore with new interior architecture for Changi Airport Terminal 3

Woodhead has completed the interior architecture for the new Terminal 3 at Changi International Airport, Singapore. The 380,000sqm terminal is a seven-storey building, including three below and four above ground levels; L1 Arrivals, L2 Departures, L3 Landside Retail Mezzanine and L4 Viewing Platform.

The interior planning includes 25,000 sq m of floorspace for 100+ retail stores, 30+ food and beverage and 20+ service concessions. A compact single shopping street layout improves the visibility of the retail outlets enhanced by the application of simple clear super graphics and way-finding signage design.

Four guiding design principles were implemented to carryout the design concept; clarity, natural light, external views, maintainability. These elements are addressed as such: For clarity the passenger journey through Terminal 3 is simple and natural. Minimal signage is required due to easy orientation via textures, materials, and subtle architectural cues. The design for the interior architecture has maximised the application of natural light available through the skylight roof structure. External views are prominent throughout where passengers have extensive visual access to the external landscape, including the take-off and landing of aircraft, contributing to the terminal’s ‘total journey experience’ and overall sense of openness. Terminal 3 is designed for ease of maintenance, from materials finishes to furniture selection.

The interior architecture of Terminal 3 is characterised by a Singaporean ‘sense of place’. Visitors to the Arrivals and Departure halls are greeted by spectacular crystal cascade waterfalls and vertical ‘green wall’ garden spanning 300 metres along the main building, reflecting the tropical lush Singaporean landscape.
