Healthy competition for the Healthcare Building of the Year

Scores of architects from 22 countries over 6 continents answered WAN's call for entries to the second category of our inaugural WAN Awards series, Healthcare Building of the Year. After thoroughly evaluating each entry, a long list of 31 buildings was announced and collated to be pondered over by the Healthcare Jury. WAN can now reveal the six buildings which have been short listed for the prestigious prize.

“The entries for the WAN Healthcare Award were refreshingly diverse in scale and design coming as they did from 22 countries but all were consistent in their high quality," said Michael Hammond, Editorial Director of WAN and Chairman of the jury. "The panel, drawn from a cross section of architects and industry experts were hard taskmasters, each interrogating the projects from their own perspective. This ranged from practical detailing, such as vulnerability to self harm, through plan layout and use of natural light, to pure ascetic and use of materials and colour.

"As always in these intense judging sessions the daunting task of selecting just six projects from the long list of 31 buildings is a huge challenge, but eventually a consensus was formed. The resultant six projects (plus one special commendation) reflect both the diversity and the quality. All are exceptional schemes and we congratulate everyone involved in conceiving and realising these world class buildings.”
