A new look at learning
The Eastfield College Learning Center, completed in December 2008, is designed to reflect the concept that learning can occur anywhere on campus. The progressive classroom and administrative office facility represents a new initiative to promote knowledge gained through interactive learning environments beyond the traditional classroom.
Studio spaces vary in size, are technology-intense and have an informal feel. The pathway circulation system connecting these spaces is activated with a variety of unique social nooks and niches. These encourage faculty, students, administrators and visitors to cross paths and mingle, allowing them to work and socialise in an environment that supports spontaneous interaction.
The 55,000-square-foot building creates a new campus gateway, along with expanding and enhancing the outdoor courtyards that are a defining element of the Eastfield site. The gateway lobby includes a welcoming coffee kiosk / internet café to further promote the important social aspect of learning.
Adjacent conferencing facilities can be used after hours for both school and community activities. Brick veneer and plaster are the primary materials used for the building’s exterior to provide consistency with the existing campus context. The simple building envelope conceals a variety of interior spaces that are almost retail in nature – visually stimulating, high energy, colourful and bright. The building, a reinterpretation of iconic campus forms, will support and encourage lifelong learning for students of all interests.
