Tritschler Tritschler & Associates complete building for Waterford Institute of Technology
The Research and Enterprise Centre at Waterford Institute of Technology is the first new development on a 150 acre site which was acquired by WIT some years ago. The building is located on part of the site that is parkland, surrounded by mature woods and bordered on one side by the River Suir. The Centre is 2,350m2 in area. There are 25 units of various sizes for early-stage businesses and many of the workspaces can be configured to specific client needs. Also available are conference, videoconference, seminar and restaurant facilities.
The building rises from a single storey to four-stories. The two-storey section has a dramatic curved roof and the upper floor of this section is a mezzanine. The curvature of the roof reflects the slope of the land and rises to meet the mature tree line on the eastern boundary. The elevation facing the River is clean-lined, spare and economical in its use of material. The eastern elevation on the other hand, which is seen through a natural canopy of trees, is rich and vibrant. It has a more organic feel complimented by the use of brick and timber windows. The windows are splayed to catch as much of the morning sun as possible. Perforated stainless steel reflectors increase the light to a maximum.
An artificial lake is located to the front of the building to provide water storage for fire fighting on the site. A fountain, ensures that the water remains fresh, which adds a dramatic feature to the building
