Sweeny Sterling Finlayson &Co Architects Inc. (&Co)
The West Don Lands Public Realm Plan project involves the updating of an approved precinct plan and the design and implementation of the elements of the pubic realm for this new Toronto neighbourhood. The West Don Lands neighbourhood includes 5,800 new dwelling units, twenty-three acres of parkland and public spaces, transit within a five-minute walk of all residences, 1,200 units of affordable housing as well as pedestrian and cycling connections to the downtown core. Quite simply, the West Don Lands neighbourhood is the most ambitious development plan in Toronto’s history.
Mark Sterling of &Co is leading the urban design aspects of the project, working with a talented multidisciplinary team commissioned by Waterfront Toronto that includes architects, landscape architects and artists as well as urban lighting and tree experts. The public realm plan includes detailed design development and construction for all the public streets and open spaces of this emerging community.
The West Don Lands Public Realm Plan includes a comprehensive approach to public realm storm water management systems, sophisticated new tree planting technologies to improve urban tree growth potential, an integrated public art strategy and the first instances in Toronto to create public “woonerfs” or “shared streets”.
Construction of the first elements of the West Don Lands Public Realm Plan is anticipated for Spring 2008.
