Hong Kong’s latest building redesign results in 4 new luxury apartments

Global architecture design firm Woods Bagot today completed their most recent Hong Kong project, the Apex House located at 16 Mount Austin Road, The Peak.

The HK$40 million project took two years to finish, due to the many challenges the architects faced in securing permission from the building authority for the extensive redesign of the existing building. The design team, led by Stephen Jones and Leslie Chan, states that this has only made the completion of the project all the more satisfying: “This was a very unique project for us as we had to work within the existing skeleton of the building, yet create a totally new sensation unexpected for The Peak,” said Jones.

As part of the design brief, the client (a private developer) tasked Woods Bagot with reconfiguring the existing building to create four duplexes, resulting in four generously sized luxury apartments of around 4,000 sq ft, all of which were designed to showcase the views from The Peak over Tsimshatsui, Victoria harbour to the East and Lamma Island and Aberdeen to the West. The architects took their design cue from Mondrian-inspired grid-based paintings, by employing a series of layered ‘frames,’ which provide a sense of richness and scale to the design, while at the same time complementing the surrounding landscape. This extends to the interior design of the apartments too, with Woods Bagot employing customised furniture which Jones said was intended to be “architecturally aligned with its surroundings to show off the stunning views”.

Permission for such an extensive redesign from the building authority took 24 months to secure as internal staircases, a new view-lift, and full height windows all had to first be approved by the building authority before construction could begin.
