Kent's first music centre receives planning permission

Full planning permission has been awarded to Canterbury Christ Church University to develop Kent in England's first purpose-built music centre. The music centre will be built in the grounds of St Gregory's Church, North Holmes Road, Canterbury, which is owned by the University and currently used for performances by music students and visiting musicians.

The music centre will incorporate a 350 seat concert auditorium, a suite of fully equipped rehearsal and practice rooms and flexible space that can be used to provide additional areas for teaching and workshops. It will be used by the University's Department of Music, the local community and visiting musicians.

The University has secured a substantial proportion of the £8 million needed to build the centre and has launched an appeal for further external funding.

Professor Grenville Hancox, Director of Music at the University, is leading the St Gregory's Development Project. He said: "The initiative to transform the University's music facilities reflects a need for dedicated space for music in Kent. The University, the city and Kent deserve and need a venue specifically designed for music. The new music centre will impact enormously upon the communities that it serves, both near and far."

The plans for the music centre were designed by Canterbury-based HazleMcCormackYoung LLP and the music centre is due to open in 2011.
