Toronto firms selected to redo famed public square

Plant Architect and Shore Tilbe Irwin have won an international competition to revamp Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto’s most important and largest civic space. The two firms were selected from four finalists by a six-member jury who dubbed their design as “imaginatively re-inventing elements of the Square” while respecting the original design of the late Finish Architect, Viljo Revell. The competition is part of the Toronto Government’s efforts to beautify and restore its public spaces. Among its many elements, Plant Architect’s design, which is based on the concept of an Athenian Agora and dubbed “Agora Theatre” features a new public pavilion with an ice rink, a new stage with an elegant roof canopy, a two-level restaurant, a new glass pavilion with an information kiosk, and a totally revamped landscape plan that increases the number of trees and species. The revamp of the 12-acre plaza, which is located in front of Toronto’s City Hall, is expected to get underway immediately. It will cost US$40 million.
