Russian Architect lands first real building in the United Arab Emirates

Yury Avvakumov is best known for his unbuilt works that are nuanced takes on 1920s Constructivist architecture. Now the Russian architect will get his first crack at a “real” building. He was recently commissioned to design an exhibition pavilion at the major cultural district being taking shape in Abu Dhabi. The neighborhood surrounding of the 670-acre cultural district planned for Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island will have 19 pavilions to provide venues for smaller exhibitions Avvakumov will design one of those pavilions at the invitation of Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and major force behind the Abu Dhabi Cultural District. Avvakumov’s five-pointed pavilion, which was inspired by Konstantin Melnikov’s 1928 Rusakov Workers’ Club, takes on a paper quality, looking as it does like origami. The architect says the shape “has five points like a palm” (the local vegetation) “ so the atrium in the center is like the palm of a hand.” Because of his lack of building experience, Avvakumov has enlisted the help of Andrei Savin of Art-Blya studios to build the pavilion.
