Arkitema wins competition for the Thor site in Randers town centre
Arkitema has just won the competition for the Thor site, which will form a natural extension of Randers Town Centre, Denmark.
A new urban district in interplay with its surroundings. The overall goals of our proposal are: to continue the existing structures and spatial qualities, including impressions from the medieval town centre, to retain the imprint of the Thor Brewery and develop a new landmark for Randers, to create an urban district with high-quality urban spaces, attractive dwellings and a dynamic commercial life, to ensure diverse and varied urban life.
The Thor Brewery has been of great importance to the town's identity, both as a landmark and as a workplace.
At the same time, the brewery has acted as a closed unit in the town centre, almost like a rock in a river. Like the river water, the life of the town swirls around the brewery. Now we are blowing the rock apart, so that the life of the town can burst in upon the extensive and centrally located brewery site.
The Thor site will be divided into smaller units and opened up, allowing the characteristic qualities and elements of the surrounding town areas to be drawn into Thors Bakke (Thor's Hill), as we will call the new urban district.
The total site covers approximately 50,000-55,000 m². The preparation of a local development plan is under way. The client group responsible for organising the competition consisted of Property Partners, Difko, Henton and KPC Byg.
