Spillis Candela DMJM completes the Consolidated Rental Car Facility & Parking Garage in Fort Lauderdale
The Consolidated Rental Car Facility represents a significant step forward in the effort of the Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport to provide world-class, user-friendly facilities. A unique building that brings all rental car companies and their fleets into one structure, the Consolidated Rental Car Facility radically simplifies and improves the experience of travelers and rental car customers. The building stores nearly 10,000
vehicles, and is among the largest parking structures in the United States.
The new facility moves drivers and pedestrians smoothly to their destinations and is designed to accommodate an automated people-mover system that will be constructed in the future.
. The nine-story structure, which accommodates 12 rental car companies, 9,000+ cars, and a full range of rental car concessions and visitor parking. The design of the garage integrates with the airport surface transportation systems to provide terminal access and convenient ingress and egress from the airport. Connections to the terminals are achieved with pedestrian bridges and a dedicated busway for consolidated shuttle
buses. The design provides for the addition of one floor of parking.
A significant challenge was the need to maintain operations of the existing major airport during construction. The facilities at the airport were master planned to accommodate two additional concourses totaling another 18-20 gates at a future date.
The project incorporates two significant Art in Public Places projects: light portals designed by renowned glass artist Jamie Carpenter and three levels of terrazzo flooring designed by Thomas Sayre of Clearscape.
